Beach volleyball is about fun in the sun. Beach volleyball is a great sport but like Hollywood it is also entertaining, hence the name Beach Volleywood. Beach volleyball is great because guys and girls can play and you can play recreationally with up to 6 people against 6 other people or competitively with 2 on 2.

This website is dedicated to connecting people with great places to play beach volleyball from Santa Monica, California to Chicago to Brazil to the entire world.

Happy Spiking!

History of Beach Volleyball

Beach volleyball started in Santa Monica, California in the 1920s.

Today, beach volleyball is a popular recreational activity on many beaches around the world, and is generally most popular in areas with wide sandy beaches; however, it is also frequently played on inland sand courts, and has become quite popular in some land-locked countries, notably Switzerland.

I got my start in land locked and freezing cold Chicago of all places!

Pro Volleyball Today

There is pro volleyball.

The AVP was established in 1983 and is comprised of the best men's and women's pro beach volleyball players in the U.S. and arguably, the world. The AVP's main goal is to deliver its fans the experience of an amazing athletic contest surrounded by an unforgettable beach party. More than one million people are expected to attend an AVP event this year. On May 31, 2001 the AVP was reorganized with a new management team led by agent Leonard Armato and his company Management Plus.

When they announced the acquisition of the tour in Manhattan Beach, Calif. they made a historic move by uniting both men and women professional beach volleyball players under one umbrella organization. With this historic unification of the men's and women's competitions, the "new" AVP Tour has been able to capitalize on having one property that could maximize sponsor dollars, marketing opportunities, media coverage and prize money.

There is international volleyball.

Volleyball has come a long way from the dusty-old YMCA gymnasium of Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA, where visionary, William G. Morgan, invented the sport back in 1895. It has seen the start of two centuries and the dawn of a new millennium. Volleyball is now one of the big five international sports, and the FIVB, with its 218 affiliated national federations, is the largest international sporting federation in the world.

Over the last decade particularly, volleyball has witnessed unprecedented growth. With the success of its world competition such as the World Championships, Olympic Games, the US15$ million World League, Grand Prix, World Cup, and World Grand Champions Cup, the level of participation at all levels internationally continues to grow exponentially.

The beach volleyball phenomenon, although hugely visible, is still just in its infancy. From the first FIVB World Tour event just over ten years ago, to the overwhelming spectator and television success of 'Beach' at the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, beach volleyball has opened up Volleyball to a completely new market.
